Diego Hidalgo Schnur is co-founder and Board member of the Spanish daily newspaper El PaÃs. He is the founder and President of Foundation for Research and Investment for the Development of Africa (FRIDA), President of Concordia 21 and founder of the Club of Madrid and the Toledo International Centre for Peace (CITpax). From 1968 to 1977, Mr. Hidalgo was Head of Division at the World Bank and was responsible for the Bank's programs in the 45 sub-Saharan countries of Africa. He studied Law at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (1959-1964) and also holds an MBA from Harvard University (1966-1968). A fellow of The Weatherhead Center for International Affairs, Harvard University, between 1994 and 1996, Mr. Hidalgo has been a Member of the Center’s Advisory Committee since 1999.
Board members
Beatriz Iraburu Elizondo has a long track record as a journalist and foreign correspondent. She is Vice Chairman of the Fundación Internacional para la Difusión de las Artes y Humanidades (FIDAH) and member of the Advisory Committee of Español Fundación para las Relaciones Internacionales y el Diálogo Exterior (FRIDE). Between 1978 and 2001 she was a foreign correspondent for the Grupo Correo in London, Paris, Washington and Rome and, in 1990, was awarded the Cirilo RodrÃguez prize for the best Spanish correspondent abroad. She holds a BA in Information Sciences from the University of Navarra.
Emma Bonino is Vice President of the Italian Senate. Until April 2008, she served as Minister for International Trade and European Affairs after having been elected as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) in 1979, 1984 and 1999. In 1994 Emma Bonino was appointed the post of European Commissioner responsible for Consumer Policy, Fisheries and the European Community Humanitarian Office (ECHO). In this position, Ms. Bonino played a vital role in challenging Europe’s impotence and the UN’s disinterest in relation to the ongoing situation of conflict and ethnic cleansing in the Balkans. She also supported the right of Rwandan Hutu refugees to receive humanitarian aid, among other pressing humanitarian emergencies of the time. Emma Bonino is also member of the Board of the International Crisis Group.
Jan Eliasson began his diplomatic career in 1965 at the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs ending it in 2006 as Minister for Foreign Affairs. He was Sweden's Ambassador to the United Nations in New York, where he also served as the Secretary General's Personal Representative on the Iran-Iraq War. In 1991, Jan Eliasson was Chairman of the UN General Assembly's working group on emergency relief, and from 1991 - 1992 was Vice President of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). In 1992, he was appointed as the first Under Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs of the UN, and was involved in operations in Somalia, Sudan, Mozambique and the Balkans. He also took initiatives on issues such as landmines, conflict prevention and humanitarian action. From 2000 to 2005 he served as Sweden's Ambassador to Washington DC, USA and as President of UN General Assembly 2005-2006.
Dr José Manuel Romero Moreno is the Count of Fontao and is Legal Advisor to the Person, Family and Household of HM King Juan Carlos I of Spain. José Manuel Romero is Professor of Legal, Moral and Political Philosophy at the School of Law at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, and is senior partner of Romero Moreno Abogados, S.L. He is President of the Fundación CEAR Habitáfrica, member of the Board of Trustees of the Fundación Axa, the Fundación Comité Español de los Colegios del Mundo Unido, the Fundación Juan Antonio Sagardoy, member of the Board of Trustees and the Advisory Counsel of the Fundación Rafael del Pino and Board of Trustees Secretary to the Real Instituto Elcano. He is also Legal Advisor to the Fundación Caja Madrid, the Fundación Caixa Galicia, the Fundación Pedro Barrie de la Maza, and the Fundación del Centro Internacional de Estudios Económicos y Sociales (LSE in Spain, to which he is the National Wealth Secretary and Advisor). He holds a degree and PhD in Law from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, as well as a degree in Philosophy and Arts (Pure Philosophy) from the same university.
José-MarÃa Figueres Olsen was President of Costa Rica from 1994 to 1998 after serving as Minister of Foreign Trade and Minister of Agriculture. He pioneered the link between sustainable development and technology, and helped create and lead the UN Information and Communication Technologies Task Force.
In 2000, President Figueres joined the World Economic Forum and became its first CEO in 2003. He is currently Chief Executive Officer of Concordia 21, which is dedicated to supporting organisations that promote development and democratic values around the world. He holds an Industrial Engineering Degree from the US Military Academy at West Point and a Masters in Public Administration from the John F Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
Juliet Pierce is an international development consultant who specialises in monitoring, evaluation and strategic planning. She is an experienced facilitator and trainer. Her 25 years experience in policy formation in the public sector in Africa, Asia and the UK includes institutional change, implementing decentralisation, and performance management and review. She was the first director of the Performance Assessment Resource Centre, funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID).
Aldo Ajello is the Former Special Representative of the European Union in the African Great Lakes Region (1996-2007). Aldo Ajello started his political career during his university years in the National Union of Italian Students. From 1976 to 1984 he was Senator, Member of the Council of Europe and the Inter-parliamentary Union, and subsequently Member of the Chamber of Deputies and the European Parliament. In 1985 he joined the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Geneva and later in New York as Assistant Secretary General.
From 1992 to 1994, he was the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General, with the rank of Under Secretary General, responsible for the UN Peacekeeping Operation in Mozambique (ONUMOZ). From 1994 to 1996 he was the Special Adviser to the UN Secretary General for peacekeeping and preventive diplomacy.
