CRISIS DATA

  • Victims. Between 1996 and 2003, almost four million people died due to the conflict that many designated “Africa’s world war”
  • Displaced. Between 1.4 and 1.6 million people were still displaced in 2006, the vast majority requiring urgent support.
  • Rape. Systematic rape was used as a weapon of war, leading to the extensive spreading of HIV/AIDS in the region.
  • Children. Approximately 30,000 boys and girls were used as soldiers, combatants or sex slaves by armed groups.

DATA ON THE HUMANITARIAN RESPONSE

  • United Nations. The UN appeal in 2000 received only 31.8% of the requested funds. In 2005, it received 64.8%.
  • OECD-DAC. In 2006, the United Kingdom, the European Comisión/ECHO and the United States provided 49% of the funding.
  • Required Funding. Humanitarian actors estimated that US$687 million will be needed for 2007.
