CRISIS DATA

  • Food deficit. The persistence of droughts and a plague of locusts at the end of 2004 led to a cereal deficit of 223,500 tonnes.
  • Affected people. Around 2.5 million people suffered from a food shortage, as well as an acute food and health crisis. A total of approximately 3.3 million people suffered the consequences of the humanitarian crisis.

DATA ON THE HUMANITARIAN RESPONSE

  • UN Appeal. The UN Appeal for West Africa (including Niger) received 98% of the requested funds (almost US$199 million). The greatest contribution came from the DAC donors.
  • Main donors. The main donors were Saudi Arabia, the United States, Canada and the European Commission.
  • Problems with the distribution of the aid. Despite high levels of funding, aid was not effective until almost two years after the identification of the crisis, which devastating for the population and their quality of life.
