CRISIS DATA

  • Worst natural disaster of 2005. The earthquake in Pakistan (7.6 on the Richter scale) was the worst natural disaster of this kind, causing 84% of all the deaths resulting from natural disasters in 2005.
  • Victims. 73,000 people lost their lives and 128,000 were injured. More than 3.5 million people lost their homes and 2.3 million experienced a food shortage.
  • Economic Losses. The economy lost US$5.2 billion, the equivalent of the Official Development Assistance over the past three years.

DATA ON THE HUMANITARIAN RESPONSE

  • Victims. 3.2 million People are estimated to need immediate humanitarian assistance.
  • UN Appeal. The UN Appeal requested US$550 for the first six months of humanitarian action. In the first month, the appeal received only 12% of what was requested; six months later, the contributions reached two thirds of the Appeal.
  • Main donors. The main donors for the Pakistani crisis were France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the European Commission, each one providing US$100 million. Saudi Arabia and the United States each provided US$500 million.
  • Government of Pakistan. The Pakistani government deployed 50,000 soldiers to help with the humanitarian assistance.
